Mobility is perhaps the most important factor in deciding any DotA game. The more mobile your hero is, the less time wasted moving across the map, and therefore that time garnered can be dedicated to maximizing your hero's aims, such as leveling up and farming.

Movement Speed is the distance covered per certain amount of time when you walk non-stop. The maximum movement speed is 522 and the minimum is 100 - there is no way to increase/decrease it beyond/below these points.
To increase your movement speed and shorten the time taken to cover distance, the most common way is to buy items. There are certain typical items that are the most needed:
Various abilities also provide bonus movement speed:
Typing -ms in game will give you the current movement speed of the hero you currently control. The way the game calculates it is:
(Base Movement Speed + Total Raw Movement Speed Bonus) * (1 + Total % Increase/Decrease in Movement Speed)
Example: A hero with Boots of Travel and is buffed by Haste was Hexed (thus turning the Hexed hero's base movement speed to 100). Since Haste increases movement speed by 100%, that hexed hero's movement speed would be:
= (100 + 85) * (1 + 1) = (185) * (2) = 370
Total Movement Speed = 370
It's as simple as walking there. However, the route you take is crucial as well. Always choose the shortest safe route. If you are a Sentinel hero in the middle of the map and your bottom right tower is under attack, striking a path through the forest (avoiding any hostile neutral creeps) will save precious seconds that could be better spent defending the tower.
It is also prudent to check on the rune spawns every time a route allows you to do so, because a single rune can greatly influence the tide of any battle that goes on.
The average movement speed among all heroes, with no items or other bonuses considered, is 300. All heroes' movement speeds are kept to increments of 5 (295, 300, 305 etc) though this is only for neatness' sake.
The fastest hero in the game is Chaos Knight, with a movement speed of 325, while Goblin Techies are the slowest, with 270.
Heroes with a ranged attack range generally have a lower-than-average movement speed, while melee attack range heroes are often above average.
