Lane

A lane is any of the three passages that link the Sentinel base to the Scourge base. The top lane runs from along the top and left side of the map, the middle ('mid') lane goes directly through the center of the map, and the bottom ('bot') lane runs along the right and bottom sides of the map. Sentinel towers occupy the lower left half of the lanes, and Scourge towers occupy the upper right lanes.

The middle lane is generally considered the primary Solo lane, because the short distance between towers allows heroes to quickly seek protection from Ganks. As the top lane features a Scourge tower closest to the corner, it serves as the Scourge's secondary solo lane, whereas the same holds for the Sentinel's bottom lane.

The Creep Waves pass through the three lanes to get to the enemy base, stopping at distinct waypoints located near Towers and corners. Throughout the early game, heroes usually stay in a lane with the creeps to get gold and experience. However, staying in one lane for too long increases the possibility of being ganked.

The game modes -OM, -NT, -NB, -NM can turn off the creeps spawning in certain lanes.

Solo Lane

A hero who goes to his lane alone is said to go solo. A lone hero on the lane will get more experience, and level up faster than the heroes in a dual lane, but he will also be more susceptible to harassing. Because of that, not all heroes are capable of soloing a lane, at the risk of being killed easily, farming poorly, and even feeding the enemy team.

Solo heroes who are melee, or rely on a Bottle to regenerate, usually take middle lane because of its relative safety (closest to the towers) and easy access to runes.

Dual Lane

A dual lane consists of two heroes, usually with synergizing skills that can protect each other or quickly kill enemies in tandem.

Babysitter + Carry

Most carry heroes have poor lane control early game, and need protection from their lane partner (the babysitter hero) to keep the enemy heroes away from him and be able to Last Hit easily. Babysitters are often Support heroes with healing skills or spammable nukes, and preferably slows or stuns to help the carry escape a gank.

Dual Stun Lane

Lanes consisting of two heroes with stuns form some of the most dangerous lane combinations. They usually consist of one initiator, with a reliable stun, and a follow-up, typically an AoE stun which is easier to land thanks to the initiator stun.

This are similar to the Dual Stun lanes, but instead of having stuns, they have slows, nukes, DoT skills, or some other combination.

Tri-Lane

Tri-lanes were very popular in older versions, but have since lost most of their power in favor of Jungling. Their compositions are very similar to Dual Stun lanes, but with a third hero to continue the combo.
