The Casting Animation of a unit, like the Attack Animation, is an animation that units have to undergo when casting spells. For example, when Crystal Maiden casts a spell, she first has to lift up her staff and begin to swing it (Casting Point), followed by slowly swinging her staff to the right in the same motion (Casting Backswing). The Casting Point and Casting Backswing, when referred to together, is known as the Casting Animation of a unit.

Casting Point

The Casting Point of a unit is the point, or the part of a unit's casting animation, before the spell is actually cast. Measured in seconds, it refers to the period between when the spell starts casting and when the spell is actually cast. Some spells have a long casting point, for example Teleportation. If the spell being cast is interrupted by ministuns before it reaches its casting point, the spell will automatically recast itself without using up any mana or being set on cooldown, since the mana and cooldown are taken at the casting point. However, if the spell is canceled by the player by issuing another command, the spell will not recast itself.

Casting Backswing

The Casting Backswing (formally known as Casting Backswing Point, but often referred to as Casting Backswing) of a unit is the point, or the part of a unit's casting animation where the spell has already been cast and the backswing animation is just a filler to look nice. The casting backswing is most easily observed when Crystal Maiden or Keeper of the Light wave their staffs to their right after casting a spell, with their 2.4 second casting backswing. When a hero with a long casting backswing like Crystal Maiden casts a spell, because the hero has to wait for the casting backswing to finish, the player is put at a disadvantage as the hero must stand still to allow the casting backswing to finish. This is overcome by techniques such as Animation Canceling or in the case of using autocast attack modifiers/arrow effects, Orbwalking.

Channeling Spells

For Channeling spells, the unit casting the channeling spell still has a casting point, most notably when Butcher casts Dismember on most fleeing heroes. Although Dismembered units should still be within Rot's AoE, this is not always the case, especially when the target is moving. This is because Pudge's casting point allows the moving unit to get out of range of Rot, but Dismember is still cast due to the Motion Buffer.
