Overview

Armor is the main protection against physical damage in DotA. Each hero starts off with a base armor (set by the mapmaker) which is increased by the hero's agility/7, in addition to any +armor items, such as Assault Cuirass and Plate Mail. Armor has two types of reduction: Armor Type, and Armor Value.

Armor Type

Physical Damage is first reduced by armor type, using the formula armorvaluereduction*incomingdamage:

Attack Type versus Armor Type Attack Type versus Armor Type

- Light Medium Heavy Fort Norm Hero Unarmoured
Chaos= 1.00 1.00 1.00 0.40 1.00 1.00 1.00
Normal= 1.00 1.50 1.25 0.70 1.00 0.75 1.00
Pierce= 2.00 0.75 1.00 0.35 1.00 0.50 1.50
Siege= 1.00 0.50 1.25 1.50 1.00 0.63 1.30
Hero= 1.00 1.00 1.00 0.50 1.00 1.00 1.00
Spells= 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.00 0.75 1.00

Armor Value

Secondly, it is reduced by armor value, using the formula: damage*(armorvalue*0.06)/(1+0.06*armorvalue)

The formula above only applies for positive values. For negative values, it is calculated differently.

Formula for damage increase (negative armour): damage*(2 - 0.94^(-armorvalue))

Armor Reduction

Certain skills reduce a target's armor. Some of these skills include:

Balance Information

The average base armor value among all heroes is 0.5 (though no heroes actually have this armor value).

Sand King has the lowest base armor (-2.7). He is the only hero who has a negative base armor that is not -1.

Undying has the highest base armor (5).

The most common base armor value among all heroes is -1, given to 33 different heroes. When counting the heroes in groups by their primary attribute, this is also the most common base armor for agility and intelligence heroes. For strength heroes, however, an armor value of 1 or 2 is most common (given to 7 and 8 different strength heroes, respectively).
